Scalp hunting in Southwest proves profitable

The profitability of scalping skyrockets in Chihuahua when they enact a scalping law and graded bounty: $100 for men, $50 for women, and $25 for children under 14. Many settlers and miners low on money turn to scalp hunting for a quick profit. In some cases, the bounty of one Indian is worth more than what Mexicans or American settlers could earn in a year. Apache and Comanche Indians were both popular with scalp hunters; for example, one bounty hunter in 1847 claimed 487 Apache scalps.
